Research —
Products of the mitochondrial genome and nuclear genome within an organism have to work together to maintain cellular and organismal health. My research investigates mitochondrial-nuclear genomic interactions, the impact changes in one genome can have on the other, and how these dynamics affect the structure and function of proteins involved in cellular metabolism. Using biochemical assays and genomics, I explore these interactions in two unique evolutionary mutant models, the three-spine stickleback fish and the Antarctic icefish - each with unique mitochondrial adaptations.
