Neurons connect to their targets via gateways called synapses. Synapses are dynamic, changing in number and composition during events like learning and memory. Individual neurons in the human brain can have hundreds to thousands of synapses. How and why some synapses can change, while others remain static is unclear. My project looks at this process in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Using a combination of genetic and chemical tools I will study dynamic synapse adaptation in these animals.
